Cooperative Care Course Series

Start Buttons and Handling
We start with start buttons! To make care cooperative, we give dogs control over their own handling and care processes by teaching them how to prompt it and end it; by showing you when they are ready, offering consent and removing it to stop care. Once our dogs have solid start (and stop) buttons, we progress to handling! We utilize classical and operant conditioning and desensitization to build positive feelings and experiences around previously difficult and even scary care procedures.
